Simple easy Kindling Makers (for sale)

Ever get sick of chopping kindling right at your stove, using a hatchet, wishing you had the perfect sized kindling just ready and waiting to start your fires? Well I found a solution - an upside down blade and a small mallet does the trick! One disclaimer - this one is old and dull, when they’re sharp, it’s a one hit wonder.

Tips and Tricks #1

Tips and Tricks #1

Here's a short video, the first in my Tips and Tricks series (not be confused with my earlier, Shut if Off series), on how to cut  a perfect circle on a table saw. This was 3/4" select plywood, but this technique can be used on anything - i.e. MDF, laminated pine, hardwood etc. Works great!

DIY amp "iso-box"

DIY amp "iso-box"

So as a carpenter, musician and sound engineer, I'm always coming up with DIY designs for the studio. I'm thinking that there are a lot of folks out there who might be interested in this unique design for an iso-box.  I was producing and engineering blues guitarist Carson Downey's new album - recording live off the floor - and needed a way to eliminate the bleed between drums and guitar. So I designed this insulated box with a 10" JBL speaker with a Shure SM 57 mic with an Orange Micro-Terror 20 watt RMS.
Built with 3/4" mdf and lined with 1 1/2" rigid insulation, the iso-box works perfectly, minimizing bleed between instruments. We liked the sound so much that we decided to use it for the entire album. It's an original design and if you are recording and need more isolation for your guitar amp sound, call me and I'll build you one!!

Designing Solar Panels

Designing Solar Panels

I've been doing a lot of research on DIY  solar panels that use alternative materials that are a fraction of the price of factory made. The links below offer some great info for all the different styles/versions of DIY designs. Great for the shop or home.  Aside from cans folks are using aluminum gutters, metal soffit, roofing and door screen instead. I am building my prototype over the next month - with soffit - and will keep you posted on the design!!

Welcome to my new website!

Welcome to my new website!

So we've decided to put together some of the work I've been doing over the last decade or so into a website. Pretty excited about it. I'll be updating this blog with building/recycling news. I'm on a bit of a home made solar panel kick right now - and also on the hunt for a good used treadmill motor to use with a bike to charge batteries. Just in case we have a winter like the last one we had! Self sufficiency, I say.
